Lucerne is not Rio de Janeiro, but carnival has a long tradition in the capital of Central Switzerland and is the spectacle of the year for the locals. During 13 days, Lucerne is in a state of emergency, a visit to the carnival crazy Lozarians is definitely worthwhile. This is about the ultimate guide.

The “Tagwacht” and the first day

We start in Lucerne with the huge party on the so-called dirty Thursday (Schmutziger Donnerstag). And that with the Big Bang at five o’clock in the morning.

The festivities are opened by Brother Fritschi, the imaginary head of the saffron guild. The oldest and largest guild in Lucerne. He crosses the Lucerne lake basin in a boat and is then accompanied by the Fritschi father to the Fritschi fountain on the chapel square, where the foetal rain is ignited.

In the afternoon we start with the famous Guggen, carnival groups and guilds, which parade through the centre of Lucerne. The traditional meeting of the members of the Lozärner Fasnachtskomitees in the Buobenmatt, under the glass pavilion, must not be missing on the dirty Thursday (and on Güdismontag). This is where the real carnival guests come together and the legendary Määrtsound sounds. Guugger sounds and a DJ create a rude mood.

Further activities of the Lozärner Fasnacht

The next highlight after the Fritschi parade on Dirty Thursday is the spectacular parade of the Wey Guild on GĂĽdismonday. If you want to go to carnival with children, you should do so in the afternoon of GĂĽdis Tuesday. Because then more than 800 children walk through the alleys at Chendermonschter and cause a lot of noise. The end of the Lozärner Fasnacht is celebrated with a large farewell parade. Fritschi and Fritschene wave again with their family at the top of the monster parade to all carnival lunatics. And then it’s time to sleep, sober up and prepare for the carnival ahead.
