The cantons of Switzerland in terms of their domestic political significance and their constitutional position and organization in, for example, the German or Austrian federal states of Switzerland, show extreme differences: the largest canton (Graubünden) has the 192-fold area of the smallest (Basel-Stadt), but also fewer inhabitants than this – while the canton of Zürich counts about 80 times as many inhabitants as the canton Appenzell Innerrhoden.

Most cantons, for their part, are divided into administrative districts, which have different structures and administrative organizations in detail.

The municipalities are called “Gemeinden” in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, although cantonal structures exist in detail, some of which also exist side by side in the same canton.
